DENVER — This weekend marks the 51st Telluride Film Festival, which channels celebs and Oscar winning directors from around the globe into the ritzy ski town. It’s one of the most important annual events in the film world, following buzz-building premieres at Sundance, Cannes and other festivals, and helps usher in the wider Oscars season next month.
Telluride’s Aug. 30-Sept. 2 event, however, is long sold out. Here are more ideas for Colorado film festivals through the rest of the 2024 awards season, with a focus on independent features and documentaries — plus the occasional “Wild Robot.”

- By LARRY FLEISHER - Associated Press
The St. Louis Cardinals have designated Tommy Pham for assignment. Friday's move ends the outfielder's second stint with the team after one month. The Cardinals recalled outfielder Jordan Walker, who had a strong rookie season in 2023 before struggling this year. Pham was acquired along with starting pitcher Erick Fedde from the Chicago White Sox on July 29 as part of a three-team trade that sent Michael Kopech and Tommy Edman to the Dodgers. Pham hit a grand slam in his first game for the Cardinals but was 2 for 28 in his last 10 games.

A measure to repeal a private school tuition funding law in Nebraska will make the November ballot
- By MARGERY A. BECK - Associated Press
Nebraska's top election official says organizers have collected enough signatures to ask voters to repeal a new law that uses taxpayer money to fund private school tuition. Organizers of Support Our Schools announced in July that they had gathered more than 86,000 signatures of registered voters. That is well over the nearly 62,000 needed to get the repeal on the ballot. Signatures also had to be collected from 5% of the registered voters in at least 38 of Nebraska’s 93 counties to qualify. Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen confirmed Friday that just more than 62,000 signatures had been verified. Evnen says the 5% threshold was met in at least 57 counties.

Game week has arrived for John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens returned to practice Friday after three days off. The focus can now turn to next Thursday’s season opener at Kansas City. The Chiefs earned the right to play in that game as the defending Super Bowl champions. They beat the Ravens on the way there in the AFC title game. Offensive lineman Patrick Mekari, safety Eddie Jackson and rookie linebacker Adisa Isaac were not at Baltimore's practice during the portion open to reporters Friday. Harbaugh said Jackson had flight issues, while Mekari and Isaac were dealing with “standard operating stuff.”

Alex Palou and Will Power take IndyCar championship fight into Milwaukee Mile doubleheader
- By JENNA FRYER - AP Auto Racing Writer
IndyCar returns to the Milwaukee Mile after an eight-year absence with a championship on the line between a pair of drivers each seeking a third series championship. In one corner stands points leader Alex Palou, who is seeking his second consecutive IndyCar title and third in four years. In the other is Will Power, winner of the 2022 championship sandwiched between Palou’s two titles. Palou carries a 54-point lead into this weekend’s doubleheader. One race is Saturday night and the other is Sunday. Palou could theoretically put Power away with a race to spare. But Power has seven career starts, including a victory, at Milwaukee. Palou has tested once at Milwaukee and never won on an oval.

Judge allows smoking to continue in Atlantic City casinos, dealing blow to workers
- By WAYNE PARRY - Associated Press
A New Jersey judge has ruled that smoking will be allowed to continue in Atlantic City’s casinos. Friday's decision by Superior Court Judge Patrick Bartels represents a major victory for the city’s nine casinos, most of which are winning less money from in-person gamblers than they did before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. But it's a setback for workers who have been trying for four years to ban smoking in their workplaces.

Los Angeles to pay $9.5M in settlement over 2018 death of woman during police shootout with gunman

Attorneys say the city of Los Angeles will pay $9.5 million to settle a lawsuit by relatives of a woman killed by police during a shootout with a gunman at a Trader Joe’s store six years ago. Corado was an assistant manager in July 2018 when a gunman being chased by police got into a shootout as he ran inside. Police said Corado was caught in the crossfire. A family attorney says the death was preventable. The City Attorney’s Office didn’t immediately comment on the settlement.

Trump wants to make the GOP a 'leader' on IVF. Republicans' actions make that a tough sell
- By CHRISTINE FERNANDO - Associated Press
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is vowing to force health insurance companies or the federal government to pay for IVF treatments, a proposal at odds with the actions of much of his own party. It reveals the former president’s realization that abortion and reproductive rights are major liabilities for his chances of returning to the White House. Even before his surprising announcement Thursday on treatments for in vitro fertilization, Trump had been promoting the idea that the Republican Party was a “leader” on IVF. Yet that characterization has been rejected by Democrats, who have seized on the common but expensive fertility treatment as another dimension of reproductive rights threatened by Republicans.

Judge orders amendment to bring casino to Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks to go before voters
- AP
A proposal to bring a casino to the Missouri tourist destination of the Lake of the Ozarks will be on the November ballot. Cole County Circuit Judge Daniel Green on Friday ruled that the casino campaign gathered enough voter signatures for the measure to go before voters. The Secretary of State’s office previously found that the campaign came up short on signatures. Missouri’s constitution only allows casinos on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. The ballot measure seeks authorization for one casino on the Osage River, which feeds into the Lake of the Ozarks.

Remembering Johnny Hockey: Johnny Gaudreau and brother Matthew shined on and off the ice

- By STEPHEN WHYNO - AP Hockey Writer
Johnny Gaudreau was known as “Johnny Hockey” for his lifelong journey in the sport he loved along with his family. He and his younger brother, Matthew, died when they struck by a drunken driver while riding bicycles not far from their childhood home. Undersized from the time he first put on skates growing up in New Jersey just outside Philadelphia, Gaudreau excelled in college and thrived in the NHL despite being well under 6 feet tall and weighing less than 180 pounds. Those who knew him also remembered him for how he embraced life off the ice.

Nursing home oversight would be tightened under a bill passed in Massachusetts
- By STEVE LeBLANC - Associated Press
Massachusetts lawmakers have approved a bill designed to strengthen the state’s oversight of nursing homes, provide anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ nursing home residents, and help protect against the spread of infectious disease outbreaks. The bill passed Thursday. It would require long-term care facilities to provide staff training on the rights of LGBTQ+ older adults and those living with HIV. It would bar staff from discriminating based on a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, intersex status or HIV status. Long-term care facilities would also be required to develop outbreak response plans to help contain the spread of disease. It's now awaiting Gov. Maura Healey's signature.

Georgia man dies after a police dog bites him during a chase by a state trooper
- AP
A south Georgia man has died after he was bitten by a police K-9 during a pursuit last week. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of Kevin Kennedy. Investigators say the chase began when a state trooper saw Kennedy driving a four-wheeler and tried to pull him over. He didn't stop, so the trooper chased Kennedy through fields until the four-wheeler overturned. Kennedy ran away, and he was chased down by a K-9 who bit him. The trooper called for medical assistance as he arrested Kennedy and noticed the bite wound. Kennedy's family says his death could have been prevented.

Child abuse images removed from AI image-generator training source, researchers say
- By MATT O'BRIEN - AP Technology Writer
Artificial intelligence researchers said Friday that they have deleted more than 2,000 web links to suspected child sexual abuse imagery from a database used to train popular AI image-generator tools. The research database — called LAION — is a huge index of online images and captions that’s been a source for leading AI image-makers such as Stable Diffusion and Midjourney. But a report last year by the Stanford Internet Observatory found it contained links to sexually explicit images of children, contributing to the ease with which some AI tools have been able to produce photorealistic deepfakes that depict children.
Man United signs Uruguay midfielder Ugarte from PSG to take summer spending to $240M
- AP
Manchester United has signed Uruguay defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain for an an initial 50 million euros ($55.7 million) on the final day of the summer transfer window. Ugarte is United’s fifth signing of the window after striker Joshua Zirkzee, center backs Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, and full back Noussair Mazraoui. It takes the club’s summer spending on new players to around $240 million. The 23-year-old Ugarte has been a target of United throughout the summer and looks set to be the long-term replacement for 32-year-old Casemiro. United sold Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay to Napoli for 30 million euros ($33 million), a transfer which created space in the squad for Ugarte.

Donald Trump moves to halt hush money proceedings, sentencing after asking federal court to step in
- By MICHAEL R. SISAK - Associated Press
Donald Trump’s lawyers are moving to halt proceedings in his New York hush money criminal case and postpone next month’s sentencing indefinitely while he fights to have a federal court intervene and potentially overturn his state conviction. In a letter to the trial judge made public Friday, Trump’s lawyers asked that he hold off on a decision on Trump’s request to overturn the verdict and dismiss the indictment in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent presidential immunity ruling. The judge had said he would rule Sept. 16. Trump’s lawyers also urged the judge to postpone Trump’s Sept. 18 sentencing while the U.S. District Court in Manhattan weighs their request that it seize the case from state court.
