Is TB covered by insurance? ›

The Health Department is required by law to bill health insurance companies for tuberculosis (TB) services. If you have insurance, the Health Department will bill your insurance plan, but will not collect any payments or copayments from you. If you do not have health insurance, you will still get services.

The test may be done at any local health department, primary care clinic, doctors office, CVS, Walgreens etc.

A rapid sputum tests is used to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) when other tests show that a person probably has TB. Rapid sputum tests are also called nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs). One of the best ways to diagnose TB is through a sputum culture.

If you have a reaction to the test, it will look like a raised bump. Your health care provider will measure the size of the reaction. If there is a bump, it will go away in a few weeks.

Any child with TB can be treated at any public health facility for free.

If you have a negative skin test, you need a repeat test at least once every four years. If you have a documented positive skin test, you must have an initial chest X-ray. After that, you still need to be screened every four years.

A positive test result for TB infection means you have TB germs in your body. If you test positive for TB infection, your health care provider will do other tests to determine if you have inactive TB (also called latent TB infection) or active TB disease.

The two-step protocol needs to be performed once only if properly performed and documented. It never needs to be repeated. Any subsequent TST can be one step, regardless of how long it has been since the last TST. If the first test in the two-step TST is positive, the second TST is not required.

Interpreting test results. The skin test reaction should be read between 48 and 72 hours after administration by a health care worker trained to read TB skin results. If a patient has symptoms of TB disease, health care providers should not wait for TB skin test results before starting other diagnostic tests.

How contagious is TB? ›

Although it is spread in a similar way to a cold or the flu, TB is not as contagious. You would usually have to spend prolonged periods in close contact with an infected person to catch the infection yourself. For example, TB infections usually spread between family members who live in the same house.

Active, drug-sensitive TB disease is treated with a standard 6-month course of 4 antimicrobial drugs that are provided with information, supervision and support to the patient by a health worker or trained volunteer. The vast majority of TB cases can be cured when medicines are provided and taken properly.

Side effects are uncommon from the Mantoux skin test. However, a person who has been exposed to TB germs may occasionally have a sizable reaction, which may cause some mild itching, swelling or irritation. These kinds of reactions should disappear in one to two weeks.

After the test, you should avoid using bandages, putting on lotion, or scratching the test area because it may affect the results. You can wash the area with water, but do not wipe or scrub. If the area itches, put an ice cube or cold cloth on it.

Redness alone at the skin test site usually means you haven't been infected with TB bacteria. A firm red bump may mean you have been infected with TB bacteria at some time. The size of the firm bump (not the red area) is measured 2 to 3 days after the test to find out the result.
