DEIThem: DEI means Didnt Earn It. Be friendly to minorities. What it is, in short.Diversity – The practice of including the many communities, identities, races, ethnicities, backgrounds, abilities, cultures, and beliefs of the American people, including underserved communities.Equity – The consistent and systematic fair, just, and equitable treatment of all individuals, including individuals who belong to underserved communities that have been denied such treatment.Inclusion – The recognition, appreciation, and use of the talents and skills of employees of all backgrounds. What are Underserved Communities? Glad you asked Underserved Communities – Refers to populations sharing a particular characteristic, as well as geographic communities, who have been systematically denied a full opportunity to participate in aspects of economic, social, and civic life. This term includes individuals who belong to communities of color, such as Black and African American, Hispanic and Latino, Native American, Alaska Native, Indigenous, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and North African persons. It also includes individuals who belong to communities that face discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity (including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, gender non-conforming, and non-binary (LGBTQ+) persons); persons who face discrimination based on pregnancy or pregnancy-related conditions; parents; and caregivers. It also includes individuals who belong to communities that face discrimination based on their religion or disability; first-generation professionals or first-generation college students; individuals with limited English proficiency; immigrants; individuals who belong to communities that may face employment barriers based on older age or former incarceration; persons who live in rural areas; veterans and military spouses; and persons otherwise adversely affected by persistent poverty, discrimination, or inequality. Individuals may belong to more than one underserved community and face intersecting barriers.Sifiso Mkhize, DEI WarriorFederal EEO SpecialistSource: DEIA MD-715

Why Politics is Hard to AvoidI’ve been reflecting on why politics seems to be everywhere these days, and I wanted to share some thoughts. 🌍✨Politics isn’t just about elections or government officials; it’s about the decisions that shape our daily lives. From the quality of our schools to the safety of our neighborhoods, political decisions impact us all. 🏫🏡For those of us passionate about social justice, mental health, and community well-being, staying informed and engaged is crucial. Politics influences the policies that affect marginalized communities, access to mental health resources, and the fight for equity and inclusion. ✊🏽🧠Even if we try to avoid it, politics finds its way into our conversations, workplaces, and even our self-care routines. It’s about advocating for what we believe in and ensuring our voices are heard. 🗣️💬So, let’s stay informed, stay engaged, and continue to push for a better, more just world. After all, change starts with us. 💪🏾❤️#StayEngaged #SocialJustice #Community #PoliticsMatters

I read this on LinkedIn from a friend of mine."If you are 45+ and don't have a mentor 30 or under..not mentee but MENTOR you are missing out on a lot of information." It made me think about the Leadership Cohort I recently graduated from for 100 Blackmen of America Inc. Which I had classmates in their late twenties early 30's And the Colligiate 100 students I spoke too that I gleaned way more information from them than I gave and I'm 50. Find a younger person to Mentor You and don't try to be Unc or Auntie just listen.

Many of us just think about this from a job perspective or view it as competitions for spaces and we don't think about children and how we mentor them.Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) have a profound impact on children, shaping their experiences and development in significant ways. Here’s how DEI can affect children:Diversity:Celebrating the diversity of children and families promotes nurturing, inclusive environments.Children bring their own culturally based expectations, skills, talents, abilities, and values into the classroom.Recognizing and valuing cultural diversity helps children develop a positive self-concept and feel respected and important.Equity:Addressing equity involves ensuring all children have access to the same opportunities, which is crucial for their growth and success.Equity in education means that personal or social circ*mstances such as gender, ethnic origin, or family background are not obstacles to achieving educational potential.Inclusion:Inclusion means actively opposing intolerance, bigotry, bias, and discrimination.Inclusive environments help children feel visible and valued, which is essential for their self-esteem and academic success.Overall, DEI initiatives in pediatric healthcare and education aim to eliminate longstanding health and educational inequities. By affirming DEI as a core value, pediatricians and educators work towards improving health equity and educational outcomes for all children. This holistic approach to child development ensures that every child is given the chance to thrive in a society that values their unique contributions.Sifiso Mkhize, MBA Diversity Equity and Inclusion Practioner
